Arrive at the Kuku Yalanji traditional fishing grounds on Cooya Beach. This unique experience, endorsed by Tourism Australia as part of their Discover Aboriginal Experiences program, is perfect for those seeking an authentic connection with culture and nature. You’ll learn about gathering bush tucker, techniques taught by your teacher, who’ll share how their community, the Kubirri Warra people, live harmoniously, taking only what they need from the land. Their foraging techniques have been passed down from generation to generation.
Lunch is hosted at Mayi Café, “Mayi” meaning “edible plants” (also “meal” or “food” in general). This place is special as it’s operated by the local community within Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre. After lunch, you’ll have time to explore the gift shop, with the opportunity to buy some Daintree tea or even some Daintree chocolate – temptations that will be hard to resist.
Next, it’s time to journey through a passageway of time, exploring 180 million years of history. Long-stemmed vines, Jurassic plants, and waterways lead to stunning emerald pools. Enjoy a slow-paced walk through this UNESCO World Heritage site, taking in every element: the subtle sounds of water trickling over pebbles, and perhaps even the rustle of the bush turkey moving its way along the forest floor.
Your afternoon continues with a scenic drive, where your knowledgeable guide will share stories of life in the area, the twenty-six Aboriginal tribal groups in this region, the ancient ‘super-highways’, how resourceful the paper bark tree is, the six seasons of nature, and other Indigenous insights – a journey where Mother Nature really does the talking.
Arrive at the Yiki people’s protected Janbal Aboriginal Art Gallery. Brian “Binna” Swindley will have you feeling inspired, connecting you with the stories told through Aboriginal paintings, the tales of the land, wildlife, reef and rainforest, handed down through Binna’s family for generations. You’ll learn his skills and discover your own, translating your story into artwork to take home, an uplifting reminder of your travels and this special experience on Kuku Yalanji country.
